When I found-out I was pregnant I read books and took courses to support a healthy, happy, pregnancy and birth. I also hired a wonderful birth doula. While I'm glad I invested in my pregnancy and birth in these ways, and grateful those experiences were mostly positive, I wish I would have focused more on the postpartum time. I guess I thought: "I know how to be tired and push through and care for another person but I've never been pregnant or given birth before and these unknowns feel scary so I need to put my energy there." Once our son came I quickly realized I needed more support, but, now it all felt so vulnerable I was overwhelmed by the idea of finding and bringing a new person into the mix. Then I learned about DoulaMatch.net and started looking through profiles. I was drawn to Megan because of her description as being trauma-informed and despite lacking years of experience as a doula it seemed clear to me she brought life experience, solid training, and a sensibility I value. Once we hired Megan and felt the profound impact her presence and knowledge brought to our family we quickly revised our contract to lengthen her time with us. I am incredibly grateful we were able to have her support for several months. Me, my partner, our dog, and especially our baby all became quiet attached to Megan and the warmth and grounding she brings. She is both highly responsible and professional while also being funny and relatable - she's good at bringing laughter and building trust. The advice my experience compells me to share with expectant parents is hire a postpartum doula. When me and my partner discuss if we want another we often say, "and next time we'll hire Megan from the beginning"!
