I had my son in February of this year. I wanted to have a different birth experience from my first one, which ended in an unplanned caesarean. For my first birth we did not hire a doula, but this time we decided to heed the advice of so many and find a birth support person. Mitzi was recommended by my midwife. My husband and I both liked her as soon as we met her. Throughout my pregnancy, when I mentioned Mitzi’s name to others in the birth world (a pelvic physio and another doula), they said things like, “Mitzi’s the best in the city,” and “I have always looked up to Mitzi.” Her reputation reaffirmed that we had made the right choice.
Throughout pregnancy, Mitzi was available to answer any questions I had in between my midwife appointments. Before my due date, she came to our home to review comfort measures and our birth wishes. When I went into labour, she came over as soon as we told her we needed her, tracking my contractions, helping with pain management, and answering questions like, “When should we head to the hospital?” Her calm confidence helped us to have a serene labour experience at home and to get us to the hospital at the right time. And then, through an incredibly painful and time-pressured pushing phase, her unwaivering encouragement helped me achieve the VBAC I wished for (with an almost 10-pound baby!). After birth she came to our house to talk about and help me process the birth and to review breastfeeding tips, and she continues to be available to answer any questions that come up.
Mitzi was an integral part of my achieving the birth I desired. When I look back at my first birth, I am filled with “what-if?” thoughts, wondering if it could have gone differently, but with this birth I am left feeling content and satisfied. I don’t expect to have any more children, but if I were to, I would want Mitzi to be a part of the experience again.
