One of the scariest, yet exciting moments in a woman's life is giving birth. I walked into the hospital very calmly. It was nothing like in the movies where you see some extremely dramatic women, you have all hands on deck making sure you are comfortable and ready for the birthing experience. I was calm at first but as soon as the contractions got closer, I realized that neither my partner nor my doula was present. Then the fear and the anxiety set in. My water never broke. It wasn't until I sat in the hospital bed that I realized life changed for me. Here I am panicking, hoping to see a familiar face, and finally, Jessica walks in. She assisted me with my breathing and with gentle hands, massaged my back. She assured me that me and my baby were comfortable. I felt at ease. After being at the hospital for about an hour and half with Jessica, my partner finally made his way to us. The atmosphere changed after his arrival. His energy didn't match up to the people in the room. He was aggressive in tone and tried to convince me that my pain was not as bad as I claimed. Despite feeling judged by some of the staff based on my age and ethnicity, and a non supportive partner, Jessica made me feel so safe. She even was supportive through labor and assisted alongside medical staff. I was so blessed to have shared that moment with her. The most important part about giving birth is making sure you have someone available that makes you feel comfortable and safe. Having Jessica as my birth support was a game changer for me. I am so thankful and honored that she was there to help me during my birthing experience.
