This was our second time working with the incredible Barbie French. In both instances, she was flexible and adaptive, caring and compassionate, knowledgeable, person-centered, fully present and focused, and helpful resource and advocate. Some mistakenly believe that doulas are for one type of mother or one type of birth -- but Barbie was non-judgmental and fully in support of my journey, regardless of my path. I ultimately had two C-sections and, in both cases, my physical, mental, and spiritual health was infinitely stronger thanks to her gentle, loving guidance. As I praperd for birth, her wisdom and support helped me feel calm, confident, and prepared, which I am certain resulted in better outcomes. In my first birth, I had some unanticipated events occur, and Barbie helped me heal and make peace. In my second birth she helped spot and rectify a serious medical error that could have been disastrous, so her being by my side was certainly more than just for reassurance. When the medical professional did not take me seriously, Barbie made sure my voice mattered. I'm not surprised to see such overwhelming research that proves birthing persons and babies are safer and healthier when well-trained, qualified doulas are involved. Investing in a doula (which is now covered by insurance in Rhode Island) is the greatest gift you can give yourself, your family, and your new baby -- and Barbie is truly the best! Barbie is forever a part of my family's story, and for that I am so grateful.
