When my wife first talked to me about hiring a doula, I was admittedly on the fence about whether we actually needed one, and it turned out we absolutely did! My wife and I hired Suzanne for the birth of our baby girl in September 2021 and it was by far the best decision we made. Suzanne helped us navigate creating a birth plan, what things would look like from a COVID perspective, and helped us get a good understanding of what to expect throughout the process/time in the hospital. One thing that was amazingly helpful was her acknowledging up front that there are inevitably variables that might change our plan during the birth and she would be there to provide advice to help us make those decisions in an informed way as things progressed. This came true on multiple occasions during the birth, where we had to weigh the medical benefits and risks of a few things, and she provided us with all of the facts and implications of each one so we could make a unified decision. During the birth, she was right by our side and was able to help support my wife with her extensive knowledge in ways I definitely could not have, which took much of the pressure and stress off of both of us so we could focus on the joy of our baby’s birth. Lastly, her communication throughout the process was very transparent. Suzanne went above and beyond even after our baby was born to ensure we felt supported as we made that transition back home, including checking in on us and even coming to help support us at home postpartum. If you’re thinking about hiring a doula and are on the fence, I’d absolutely recommend doing it, and hiring Suzanne.
