My husband and I waffled back and forth about hiring a doula. After having Carli at our side for our first birth, I can confidently say we made a fantastic choice. Carli is a friendly, faith-filled woman with a heart for helping families.
We found ourselves at the hospital when I was a whopping 1cm dilated after my water broke, having no idea how hard it would be to think clearly during labor. Carli didn't have to come so early on, but she did. She assisted us in making informed decisions about using Cytotec and Pitocin to speed up labor. She didn't pressure us one way or the other, but gave us with facts so we could make a comfortable decision. When my contractions got more intense, she swooped in with pain management techniques and tips on how to keep labor progressing. She was a steady companion as we walked the halls, did lunges, rocked and swayed, and helped labor progress when I was sitting up. Most helpful of all was when I was 9.5cm dilated and 98% effaced. Carli helped me into a side-lying position for a few final contractions. When the time came to push, her voice and my husband's voice were the only ones I could hear. 30-45 minutes later, our daughter was born, with our birth goals met!
Carli is also a breastfeeding guru! Before birth, she taught us what a correct latch looks like and how to tell if our baby was getting enough nutrients. She helped our baby latch from the moment she was put on my chest! At our postpartum visit, she offered suggestions to lessen soreness and pain during the first weeks of breastfeeding. As our baby has grown, Carli has offered ideas on new positions to try to help me maintain my breastfeeding success.
Carli went above and beyond her call of duty by acting as emotional, physical, and intellectual support. We are so blessed to have not only her expertise but also her friendship. If you are in the same boat wondering if getting a doula is "worth it," hesitate no more! Carli is a terrific choice!
