With my first baby, I had no idea what to expect with labor. It ended up being very different from what was in the books and in the classes we had attended. We went to the hospital too early, had several interventions, ended up with an epidural that didn’t work well, etc. Overall the first labor was not a good experience, and I struggled with negative feelings about it for months afterward. I knew I wanted a different experience for bringing my second child into the world, and, before we were even pregnant, I was looking for a doula. My husband took no issue with having a Doula as he understood she would not replace him, and he did not like feeling helpless with not knowing how to help me during labor. My OB recommended Aubrey at one of our follow up visits. I appreciated the free meet and greet that Aubrey offers and that her back up Doulas were ones that were high on our list as well. During our interactions, Aubrey repeatedly told me that she is non-medical, she does not deliver babies and we understood that this was not her role. We needed a labor coach. Aubrey provided great text support pre-labor and her resources for labor meditation were essential in getting me through this labor. I handled contractions much better this round. As things began to intensify, Aubrey arrived for in-person support. She was timing contractions and providing position and support suggestions to me and my husband. Even when labor progressed rapidly, Aubrey stayed calm and guided us through the process. Aubrey and my husband delivered the baby with my OB on the phone and EMS arriving shortly after. Looking back, everything went exactly as I had hoped (except for the not making it to the hospital part) even down to preferred birthing position. I am very thankful that we had Aubrey to coach us and to take lead when it turned into an emergency situation. Despite things getting crazy, it was a great birthing experience and certainly one that we will never forget.
