We hesitated about hiring a doula. Reflecting on the pregnancy, labor, delivery and postpartum, hiring our doula Kali King was our best decision. Kali made us feel calm and confident. From the start, she got to know us personally and our birth preferences. Kali is very responsive and an excellent communicator. She suggested questions for prenatal visits and helped explain conditions identified by our provider as common or unusual.
Kali excels in a crisis. As an expecting Mom, I was admitted to the hospital for preterm labor at 28 weeks. Kali immediately explained what to expect in the hospital. Kali’s knowledge about procedures and potential outcomes helped us manage hospitalization stress. She engaged in nurse and doctor conversations, clarifying items we had not considered and counseled me through anxiety.
Weeks later, at delivery, Kali helped us remember the last minute to-dos. During labor, she coached us through comfort measures. Kali worked well with nurses and doctors and initiated different positions to progress labor. We also hired Kali for postpartum hours and highly recommend this additional service. The first few weeks with a newborn are hard, even in the best circumstances. Having Kali’s expertise for a few hours (or better, a whole night, so you can sleep) is invaluable.
As an expecting Dad, Kali provided Natalie with the patient advocacy she needed to help her feel secure. Although Kali is not a doctor, having an experienced childbirth expert to translate the severity of an option or diagnosis, or mostly reminding you what is normal, is super helpful. Kali helped me figure out how to be helpful to Natalie and the baby before, during and after delivery. Kali also made sure I got my rest, which partners who are not delivering tend to forget. Understanding the vast information flows was our biggest hurdle. With Kali, we overcame that effortlessly.
