Barbie was recommended by a dear friend. I was a first time mama to be and was striving for a natural, unmedicated birth and wanted to ensure I had the support needed to do everything in my power to make this a reality. We didn’t know at the time JUST how beneficial doula services would be but working with Barbie was above and beyond! After our initial consultation, we both felt at ease with Barbie. She was an unparalleled resource of information and we hired her that day! Throughout my 3rd trimester, she continued to offer support and guidance, answering my questions and prepping me for what to expect in my pregnancy, labor and delivery. When my water broke Hurricane Henri was reported to be hitting Newport the next day. When my labor hadn’t progressed as quickly as we had hoped, she called me as she was concerned she wouldn’t be able to get over the bridges w the weather. I braced myself, thinking she was calling to let me know she may not be able to make it, but she was instead calling to ask if she could come to Newport earlier so that she didn’t miss the birth! She waited at our house until I was in active labor, providing support over the phone, then joined us at the hospital. She was so helpful to both my husband and I, providing pain management techniques and positions to help baby descend further. Even my nurses and midwife commented on how knowledgeable she was. Our baby boy didn’t arrive for another 24 hours or so and Barbie was there the whole time supporting not just me but my husband. After his birth, she helped with getting baby to latch and also took so many photos of him and us within minutes of his birth so that my husband and I could be fully present. Giving birth is surreal and you’re both there but not there during labor and delivery so having Barbie there to help advocate for us when baby boy had plans of his own was the single best investment we made leading up his birth. 10/10 recommend!
