Our midwifery practice referred us to Belwether Doulas. When we asked them about availability, they unfortunately were already booked for our due date. However, one of the doulas worked with Barbie and recommended we contact her. Thankfully, Barbie was available! From the beginning, Barbie was friendly and communicated promptly. She worked well around our schedule and met with us to discuss goals and review basic birthing information. Not once did she ever rush our conversations, and it was clear spending time getting to know each other and support us in every way necessary was a priority for her. We never once felt she was unreachable or delayed in contacting us, and when we needed someone to talk to, whether it was about what our medical team was recommending or just reassurance in a difficult moment, she was always there. She helped us create and keep track of a birth plan by asking us several questions and talking through our goals and rationales. She was valuable in sorting through what was most important to us for our birth plan and why. She also provided us with Spinning Babies exercises to help position the baby prior to birth. Our actual birth did not go according to plan, and I ended up needing an emergent C-section. Because we could not have Barbie there for the actual birth, she joined us immediately afterward, and she again was so valuable. She helped me breastfeed the baby for the first time and supported us in the aftermath of the birth. Her presence was immensely comforting and reassuring. In the days and weeks following the birth, Barbie continued to periodically check in with us and see how we were doing, which was so kind and appreciated, especially after our unexpected birth experience. I could keep going, but if you are looking for an amiable, knowledgeable, dependable, supportive doula, we strongly recommend hiring Barbie. If we have another baby, we would hire her again in a heartbeat!
