Barbie was an incredibly valuable addition to every step of our pregnancy and birth, from prenatal care to the first moments nursing our baby. When choosing to hire and doula, our only hesitancy was in having a third-party present for what felt like such a significant moment for our family. This concern could not have been more unwarranted. Looking back, it’s hard for me to imagine the process without Barbie there. From our first meeting, we knew she would be a positive and comforting addition to our baby’s birth. Barbie cared about our family’s whole experience, emotionally and physically. She was also a source of evidence-based resources to help us make important decisions. It like she really wanted to get to know us, adding to the trust we had in her to be present when the day came. As a first-time mom, it was incredibly helpful to have Barbie on call in the weeks leading up to our due date, as she helped me make sense of symptoms and pre-labor experiences. When labor started, she was consistently present. When we had a difficult time contacting our doctor, Barbie offered important advice that kept us calm in the moment and helped us make the right decisions. She was by our side through a full 24 hours of labor, which involved two trips to the hospital and laboring at home for some time. She offered pain management help and constant support for myself and my husband. I can’t say enough about how her calm and consistent presence was exactly what we needed. When it came to pushing, Barbie remained incredibly valuable. She suggested additional positions, reminders about breathing, and was responsive to my feedback. We were so joyed happy to have her there when our baby entered the world. Finally, she provided support and guidance in getting a good latch for the first breastfeeding moments. In sum, hiring Barbie was probably the best decision we made in our birth plan, and I would recommend (urge) anyone to hire her as your doula.
