My husband and I decided to work with a birth doula as we didn't know what to expect as first time parents, and were a little bit terrified of what the experience would be like. After a false alarm the evening before, we were unsure whether it was the "real deal" when contractions started up again the next evening. Suzzie stayed up with us all night texting and offering guidance and support. When the contractions intensified, Suzzie suggested we call L&D and that she would meet us there. Our goal was natural labor but the pain was so intense that I wanted an epidural almost immediately upon arrival at the hospital. I got in the birthing tub as an intermediate step to manage pain which is when Suzzie arrived to save the day. Suzzie was a calming, kind, and confident presence and did wonders for our nerves/panic, and was a true lifeline through the birthing experience. We were able to follow her directions for pain management, and her positive affirmations and encouragement carried us through. She did not leave our sides from the moment she arrived. Multiple times during active labor I exclaimed (screamed, really) to her that "I couldn't do it" and she was able to recenter, refocus, and calm me down. I also had her hands (and my husband's) in a death grip the entire time and Suzzie was completely unphased. The medical team raved about how amazing of a doula Suzzie was and that they had never seen anyone quite like her. We had such a positive birth experience and the unmedicated labor we wanted, and couldn't have done it without her. I had postpartum complications, and we were feeling overwhelmed with transitioning to life with a newborn. Suzzie was truly wonderful in our postpartum visit, finding us local resources, and checking in (just because). We are so incredibly lucky to have worked with Suzzie, and are thankful for her care, compassion, and competence.
