My husband and I first met Jenn when we signed up for a series of childbirth classes she offers at a local birthing center. I was a novice at all things baby – the concepts of things like birth and breastfeeding were all abstract to me at the time. I did not have a doula. Throughout the course of Jenn’s birthing classes, my eyes were opened to just how much I did not know about childbirth. Jenn’s depth of knowledge and warm, inviting personality helped me feel empowered. I began to think about things like a birth plan and informed consent at the hospital. At 37 weeks, when my OB-GYN was pushing us for a planned c-section due to the predicted size of our baby, I became disheartened. I was intimidated and unsure of how to advocate for myself and my son. I realized at that point that a doula would be vital for our family and Jenn graciously agreed to support us through the last few weeks of our pregnancy. I credit her skills and unwavering support as one of the main reasons why my healthy, 9lb 4oz baby boy was able to be delivered vaginally. Her collaboration with our healthcare team and encouragement to us made birth feel unburdened. I leaned on her heavily during the first few weeks of postpartum – she provided me with information but never pressured me to make a decision that was not aligned with our family’s values. Jenn’s education helped me understand the importance of breastfeeding. When my son struggled to latch, Jenn helped connect me to the lactation consultant who was instrumental in getting us through those first difficult months of nursing. On my son’s first birthday, Jenn sent a recording of his first cry at the hospital – a moment that my husband and I were too fatigued to capture ourselves. Just thinking about it now makes me tear up. It truly does take a village to bring our children into the world and I cannot imagine having gone through that experience without Jenn by our side.
