Because we hired Justine and the Midwest Doula team for the birth of our second child, we (more or less) had an idea of what labor was like and how a doula could help us through it, and also how I hoped to feel about the birth afterwards. Justine was amazing at contributing her vast expertise in a direct way, while also helping me to feel in control and empowered in my decisions throughout the process, even when labor was at its most intense. It turns out I was only in labor for 4 hours - chalk that up to a 2nd baby maybe, but I also think Justine's doula skills helped with both the physical and the psychological sides of labor, keeping the baby moving and me feeling relaxed and confident about the process. I feel amazing about my birth thanks to all her support.
Other things I appreciated: the team is really matter of fact and evidence-based, which was important to me and my husband based on our personalities, values, and the kind of support we were looking for. Also, it's clear that Justine will make herself available to answer questions and provide resources long after the initial postpartum phase.
We honestly weren't even sure we needed a doula for our second kid, but I am so glad we made that decision - childbirth isn't something most of us do a ton of times and it was entirely worth it to have it be such a positive experience. Merci mille fois Justine!
