Hiring Shannon was one of the best things I did to prepare for my labor. When I think about the good moments of my daughter's birth, Shannon was a part of almost every one! I think of Shannon feeding me yogurt as we got ready to leave for the hospital at 1:30am. I think of Shannon helping me change into my gown, stopping multiple times in the hospital hallway as we walked to our room to give me counter pressure through contractions- the only thing that got me through my excruciating back labor. I think of Shannon reminding my spouse to eat so he wouldn’t pass out. I think of Shannon crying for me in moments of trauma, and holding my leg for hours. I think of Shannon stepping away to give my spouse and I space as he talked me through a moment of intense emotion.
How do you even describe the intimacy that you share with someone who supported you, physically, emotionally, and spiritually, though one of the hardest, most traumatic, and most rewarding experiences of your life? Any birthing person would be lucky to have someone on their birth team as supportive, kind, and fierce as Shannon.
