For the birth of our first child, my wife and I believed hiring a doula would be a good idea. Although I was on board initially, I never could have imagined how helpful, comforting, and reassuring it would be to have Barbie with us, in the weeks leading up to the big day, during labor, and in the weeks following.
Not long into our first meeting I was convinced that Barbie was providing an invaluable service and could not have been more thankful that we had connected. Sorting through the birth-plan options, anticipating all the possible scenarios, and learning about our rights fostered a real confidence in me that not only did we have an expert in our corner, but that we were going into labor and delivery with a well-rounded sense of what to expect and how to move in the direction we wanted in an array of possible circumstances.
When the dark, windswept, and rainy February morning finally arrived, Barbie was waiting and ready at the entrance to W&I with a wheelchair, umbrella, and the extraordinary graces of calm and warmth in a time when we needed them. To say that her presence helped put me at ease in one of the most stressful moments of my life is an understatement!
Throughout the day as labor continued, Barbie’s presence, and knowing that the three of us as a team had prepared as well as we could and were thoroughly on the same page, allowed the experience to feel natural and welcome. From a husband and a new father’s perspective, having Barbie with us leading up to and throughout the critical moments of having a baby was the very best thing we could have done for ourselves. I am so thankful we found her. She and the expertise she brings to the table are truly gifts and I cannot recommend her highly enough. Thank you, Barbie!
