Since learning about doulas and their effectiveness in improving birth outcomes in college, I knew I wanted a doula. My husband and I liked the idea of having someone with more experience with us as we navigated having our first baby (and during a pandemic on top of it all). We were planning a hospital birth, and we felt a bit uncomfortable with the number of people we interacted with who questioned that decision. Laura was the only doula we interviewed with who did not try to push us to consider a birth center. We appreciated that very much at the time. Ultimately, due to my desire to have an unmedicated birth and the hospital's requirement that laboring moms wear a mask, we did decide to change to a birth center. Laura was wonderful in helping us through that decision, guiding us and providing information without ever making us feel like this was the only way. Meeting with her before the birth helped ease our anxiety about when to go to the birth center and when to call her. I felt so comfortable going into giving birth, knowing that my husband and I would have Laura's support.
On the day our baby decided to make his entrance, Laura was in touch with my husband throughout the day. When we arrived at the birth center, her presence was so calming. It seemed like she knew exactly what to do to help me, before I even knew what would help. She worked really well with my husband, and I remember appreciating the fact that he could go get some food or water and know that I was being very well cared for. I never felt rushed or pressured or worried throughout the entire process, part of which is definitely thanks to Laura! I am also incredibly grateful that we ended up at the birth center, because I am certain I would not have had such a perfectly positive birth experience if I had been in a hospital.
To sum up, I cannot express how grateful we are to Laura. She is wonderful!!!
