Although we were skeptical at first about doulas and the nature of the services they provide, we eventually understood how valuable they can be in providing evidence-based support and guidance during pregnancy and labor and delivery, especially for anxious first-time parents like us, delivering in the middle of a pandemic, in a city with no access to immediate family and close friends for additional support. Working with Lynn turned out to be one of the best decisions that we made during the pregnancy. Lynn helped us feel confident and as prepared as we could be for the delivery and the immediate postpartum period. We appreciated her evidence-based approach drawing upon her extensive experience, her kindness and her patience in addressing our many (many) questions and concerns, and simply knowing that she was part of our support team.
Although our labor and delivery ultimately progressed much more quickly than we had anticipated, with a very short stay in the L&D hospital ward, we valued her assistance in figuring out whether what we were experiencing was normal, when to head to the hospital and what to expect, and she remained a calm, professional and reassuring presence when we got there. As a new mother, I found the additional support and attention to my needs particularly helpful in the highly medicalized Manhattan hospital environment, where the delivery process is naturally focused on achieving a safe and efficient delivery. Lynn ensured that the hospital staff paid attention to the preferences in our birth plan (cord cutting, mirrors etc.), that my husband and I had the support and encouragement that we needed to get through it, and discretely captured the moment when we first met our son with some wonderful photos.
I would not hesitate to recommend Lynn to other families that are considering hiring a birth doula, particularly in these stressful times. We hope that we can work together again.
