When we were looking for a doula for our first birth, we were hoping to find someone who we felt comfortable with and who had body work experience. After interviewing a couple candidates, we ended up picking Jessica.
Jessica immediately impressed us with how much training and knowledge she had when it came to her doula practice. I truly enjoyed getting to know her in the months leading up to my birth. She was extremely informed about birth work, sought to learn more by engaging with the birth work community, and took classes to improve her knowledge. Her communication was incredible and she was encouraging while also helping me be pragmatic about my upcoming labor.
These traits were all vital as my labor coincided with the rise of COVID-19 and the change in visitor rules. She kept us up to date of our hospital's policies and maintained frequent communication with me as I went through weeks of prodromal labor. Despite wanting a minimal intervention birth, it ended up being the complete opposite by starting with induction and ending with a c-section. She was supportive and encouraging throughout each obstacle we faced in my 40+ hour labor. She was constantly giving us ideas on how we could help progress labor and worked really hard to make sure both my partner and I were as comfortable as possible.
I'm sure there are plenty of people who could talk positively about Jessica as a doula when their labor goes as planned, but I think a professional’s true skill shows in how they respond when everything goes the other way. Jessica was a light and source of comfort in an otherwise difficult and traumatic labor. She made us feel confident about our decisions and helped us process what had happened after the fact. I would recommend Jessica to anyone and would be happy to have her help us in subsequent births.
