I decided to work with a doula, expecting that there would be a lot to navigate as a first time mom. What I didn't expect was that I would give birth during a pandemic!
Even though Jessica could not come to the hospital with us, she provided us with invaluable support while I laboured at home, and that support has continued since we arrived back home from hospital. Perhaps most valuable has been the breastfeeding support and education. My baby has been gaining weight like a "superstar" according to our doctor! And, unlike many new moms I know, I have not experienced the pain often associated with breastfeeding - I attribute this to my ability to assist the baby in achieving a deep latch.
Even though I did not know I would be giving birth during a pandemic, I would have made the same decision to work with a doula even if I had. Having the support and assistance of Jessica has been so helpful, especially since I cannot have other visitors or support from family and friends during this unprecedented time.
