Hiring Efe was the best thing my husband and I did for ourselves while preparing for our baby. The main reason we wanted a doula was for guidance on the big day, but Efe helped us prepare for when the baby actually came (surprisingly we hadn’t thought that far ahead...). She encouraged my husband and I to articulate our expections for household management, emotions during and after labor, handling family, and taught us how to bond with our baby. She helped us decide on our birth plan and how we wanted to communicate with doctors and each other during labor. We planned to labor at home and deliver at the hospital without pain medication. I wound up getting induced at 38 weeks because of a (not accurate) growth scan saying my baby was too small. I was given oral drugs to prepare my body for Pitocin, and while waiting for them to work I used Efe's techniques to encourage labor to progress on its own. I started to have contractions and my water broke while laboring on the yoga ball. My OB still wanted to administer Pitocin even though my contractions were escalating quickly, but she was absent so Efe helped my husband manage the nurses, who allowed me to continue at my own pace without administering additional drugs. Six hours later our daughter was born! Efe encouraged me when I was in my darkest place, when I said I couldn’t do it anymore she said I could, because look - I already was! I’m surprised I didn’t break her hand from squeezing it. My husband and I are both fully convinced that I would have been given Pitocin, and probably an epidural, if not for Efe’s help. We love her and are so grateful that she was there for us!!
