Getting MaryBeth as our doula was one of the game changers for us. We were worried about our first hospital birth (since we had s home birth with our first), but she helped us navigate all the options and choices and gave us a voice by writing our wishes in a birth plan. Even though the birth went way differently than we had hoped (water breaking first, not getting a lot of our wishes met because we were early term at 35 weeks, needing to go on pitocin, choosing a c-section), MaryBeth helped us navigate the emotional landscape of all these decisions while also ensuring that we were well informed and well taken care of. She partnered with the nurses, midwives and doctors to help us understand our options and make the best decisions for our labor and the health of our baby. Two things she said impacted me deeply, one was when I wasn’t progressing even on pitocin and she said that we were simply waiting for the medicine to do it’s job and it wasn’t effected my any of my efforts to “trigger” more intense contractions. This gave me the permission to give myself rest while waiting. Then as we were preparing for the c-section, she reminded me that it was still me birthing my baby. It wasn’t the surgeon birthing my baby, but me. That was so wise and circumvented any thoughts of failure or disappointment. I am so incredibly grateful for MaryBeth and her support. My husband even said “we should be paying her more. I want to pay her more.” She is worth every penny and more!
