We loved having Jill as our doula! When we started to look for a doula I had a few concerns. As a physician, I was nervous that they would all be a little too “woo-woo” for us. However, Jill had a very reasonable and balanced approach to birth that jived well with us. I also worried that hiring a stranger to share one of the most intimate moments of our life might be awkward, but Jill was so easy to talk to and she quickly felt like a good friend. It became clear that she was the right person for us!
It was so great to have Jill’s support via text in the last few weeks of my pregnancy. She wanted to hear about all of our appointments and she answered all of my silly questions. I wish we had hired her sooner so I could have had that for the entire pregnancy! The day that I went into labor I was in tears because I wasn’t sure if it was the real thing or not (since I had had prodromal labor for a couple of days beforehand—so frustrating!) and I remember feeling such a relief as soon as Jill came to the house. Once she was there I didn’t have to worry or think anymore, I could just focus on getting through each of my contractions.
We ended up having exactly the labor and delivery that we had wanted—laboring at home for as long as possible, getting to the hospital at 8 cm, and delivering our baby a few short hours later without any medications or interventions. I know Jill can’t promise such an outcome for all of her clients but I do feel like she was critical in accomplishing it for us. She took some great photos of the birth (and even managed to get some of baby crowning while still respecting my request for “nothing graphic!”). I am so glad that we have them to look back on such a special day!
