I tapped three different networks in search of a doula, and all three - including my overly matter of fact OB, said Kelly Sunshine. When I met her, I understood why. Kelly has the gift of comfort - meeting her is feeling like you gained a new best friend or found a long lost sister. She is a doula with no agenda other than to support, educate and lift you up. I knew that I wanted to attempt a natural childbirth. At my six-month appointment my OB asked if I would be having a doula. As a first time mom having no idea what I was getting into, I shrugged off the suggestion as my husband mouthed to me “what’s a dew-la?” I didn’t think I needed one for a successful natural birth, but ran across a statistic about c-sections performed to benefit a doctor’s schedule and was floored - my research led me down a black hole of hospital birth standards and potential consequences; by month 7, I was on the scramble to find a doula as I knew in my heart it was necessary for me to have unbiased information during delivery. I interviewed other doulas who made me feel terrible for choice in OB and birthing at a hospital. With Kelly, there was none of that. She understood *our* needs and provided us ample education and down-to-earth communication. Kelly is known and respected in the L&D community. Her knowledge of practitioners and nurses was pivotal in my delivery as she knew the on-call doctor was “c-section happy” and we were able to strategize ways to keep him at bay. She talked us through the whole birthing process and provided us the support we couldnt have guessed we would need. We look back on our birthing experience with no regret - this is thanks to Kelly!
