Sometimes you don't know what you have until after the fact. When I asked Liz to be my doula, I didn't know exactly what I was asking for. No one I knew had ever had a doula nor a midwife. Babies were born in hospitals by a male doctor, that's all I was familiar with. I wanted to have as different and comfortable an experience as could be possible.
Liz became everything I needed before, during and ever after my son was born. She checked-in with me (as much or as little as I needed) before hand and was a supportive presence throughout the long 30+ hours of labor I endured. I had my husband and my mother in the room and being the nurturing person, I am, I knew that I would struggle with their needs vs. mine, and that's where Liz stepped up. She tailored herself to my very specific needs: I needed someone to be with my mom and comfort her when I was unable to. I needed someone to make sure my husband drank and ate, when I was unable to. I needed someone to tell me everything was going to be ok, when I was unable to believe that. Liz was there for all of that and more.
A week after our son was born and we were finally settled in our home trying to get into the new rhythm of newborn life, my husband reflected on the experience and said "I'm so glad Liz was there. I didn't know what to expect but I'm so glad."
Sometimes you simply don't know what you need until you're in the moment and Liz was there for those moments of uncertainty.
We will all look back at our birth experience for what it was: a unique and universal experience across the human experience but what made my birth so special was knowing Liz was there, watching over us and I am forever grateful.
