Honestly when my wife first asked me if we could hire a doula I wanted to tell her no. Babies are already expensive and all my brain saw was more $$$$ dollar signs stacking up. Still I was not the one who was going to have to be pushing a baby out so I let my wife have what she wanted. And boy am I glad that I did. We first met Jill when she came to our house to meet with us. We discussed our birth plan and my wife got to communicate her wishes with Jill, who understood them. There was talk of birthing styles, midwives, pain relief options, most of it over my head. We met with Jill one more time near our due date but she was always available for questions whenever my wife had them.
As I was putting our first child to bed on New Year's Eve eve my wife let me know that the real contractions had started. We were about a week past our due date by this and generally tired and grouchy. Jill responded quickly and showed up at our house around 10:00pm. She quickly had my wife finding positions that were comfortable, coached her through breathing with the contractions, and had me focused on what I could do (most of which was staying out of the way). Honestly I was a mess, and I am sure that without Jill there I would have been panicking. Jill worked with my wife at home for several hours at our house and when she felt it was time we left for the hospital. She stayed with us the whole way, always coaching my wife through the contractions and she was on top of the staff in this hospital. She know what questions to ask, who to call, and most importantly how to communicate effectively with the hospital staff to match my wifes needs.
My wife gave birth naturally 8 hours after starting labor with no major issues or hiccups and I believe that Jill was a major part of that. She brought a sense of calm and positivity to labor and made sure that my wife was taken care of, to me that was priceless. I strongly recommend hiring Jill, trust me, it is worth it.
