Having Heidi as our doula was the best decision we could have made for our family. From the beginning she would make sure to check in periodically to see how I was doing and how my prenatal visits went. She also knew the midwives I worked with so it felt like I had support from all sides when I would have concerns or questions. When it came time to delivery, I tried to have a medication-free labor. Heidi was so comforting and would make sure I took it one contraction at a time. When it was clear that I wasn't progressing as quickly as I should be, I requested an epidural. Fast forward 10 hours later and I was stuck at 8 cm. I had a horrible nurse that just got assigned to my room and she was not helpful. She told me that my baby was in distress and that I should prepare for a c-section. I was panicked, not because I was attached on having a vaginal birth and feelings of giving up by having a c-section, but because I am literally allergic to most pain medication and the thought of having an even more difficult recovery due to a c-section scared me. Heidi swiftly acted and got that nurse out of my room, gave me advice and advocated for the midwife to check me one more time. Miraculously, through great care and coaching I was able to push my baby out in 9 minutes without being fully dialated. And in the middle of all that the doctor had arrived to prep me for the c-section and was amazed at what we had accomplished. I am clear that had Heidi not been in that room, I wouldn't have had the birth happen vaginally. I am forever grateful to her and my midwife.
