I vacillated during my entire pregnancy as to whether I should hire a doula. I wanted to try to have a natural birth, without any pain medication, but I knew this was a lofty goal and that professional support would be a necessity. I was, however, unsure of how I'd feel having a "stranger" in my delivery room. Well, all I can say is that one of the best things to happen to my labor and delivery experience (besides my beautiful son!) was finding Heidi. Immediately from our first meeting I felt as if I'd known Heidi my whole life. Heidi has a natural, affable way that puts you at ease. During my labor, my worries of "having a stranger in the room" quickly faded as I watched Heidi talk and bond with my partner, Kevin, and my parents. On a professional level, she is extremely responsive. From the start of my labor at home, Heidi was there for me, answering my questions via text and taking my calls. In addition to her responsiveness, Heidi knows her stuff! She helped me muddle through the confusing and overwhelming information given by doctors and nurses, including helping me make the decision to get an epidural after my labor had gone on for over 40 hours. And later, when it came to the heavy business of pushing, Heidi was at my side, feeding me ice chips and reminding me to breathe. Heidi's support also helped Kevin, by allowing him rest at times. This proved indispensible later, as I slept for twelve hours after the birth and Kevin front-lined our baby's care. Even now, weeks after my son's birth, Heidi still answers my questions. Her experience as a mother of three, combined with her knowledge of pregnancy, labor, delivery and what happens postpartum, make Heidi uniquely positioned to provide the full range of support a woman needs to prepare for, deliver, and mother a baby. I feel blessed to know Heidi and call her my friend. Kevin and I have plans for more children. I can say unequivocally: I will never birth without Heidi by my side.
