To get ready for labor my husband and I took a lot of classes and we practiced relaxation techniques every night in the third trimester…well, we might have missed a few nights! We started with a full day comprehensive childbirth class and we also took a 5-week hypnobirthing class. All of these were instructed by Liz Oldham. We opted for hypnobirthing because I wanted to learn the relaxation techniques I could call on during labor in the hopes of having an un-medicated birth. We learned so much from Liz and at the very least I can confidently say that we went into this process ready to make very informed decisions! After meeting Liz at the one-day comprehensive child birth class we knew we wanted her to be our Doula. She’s fun, has done this personally (4 times!), and is a huge emotional support. I was a very nervous pregnant woman (I’m a worrier anyway, but there were legitimate family experiences weighing on my mind) and I knew I wanted to have someone there that would make me feel more at ease. Especially since we wanted to labor at home for as long as possible before going to the hospital and we knew we wouldn’t have an opportunity to meet the Midwife or Doctor that would deliver William before I went into labor. Liz was my warm fuzzy comfort blanket, she had a calming energy and I loved her extensive knowledge about everything having to do with pregnancy and birth.
