My husband and I both had a terrific impression of Tobin during our initial meeting and could immediately see the value of having her support as we navigated the early days of parenting. But it was actually my husband Kurt who championed us hiring her. To sum up his words: “Once we get home from the hospital…it’s you, me, Google, or 911. And I have no idea what to do when it comes to taking care of a baby!”
Once we brought our daughter home Tobin began supporting us as we learned how to feed, swaddle, bathe, and understand our baby’s cues. I am a researcher by profession, and while I could have been reading lots of books, websites, and manuals to help us navigate all the “how-to” of the early days, it was so much nicer to have an actual person patiently walk us through things in real time and answer our questions. Her observations reassured me on what is normal regarding breastfeeding and pumping, and her suggestions helped make things smoother. She had a multitude of practical suggestions and baby wisdom, big and small. Tobin’s assistance helped my husband and I get breaks when we needed them and ensured we were well fed and hydrated so we could put optimal energy toward our daughter. She also helped with small household tasks, which meant that friends and family who stopped by could enjoy baby time, rather than needing to help us catch up on chores.
In addition to all the practical help Tobin provided, she also has an incredible personality that was a joy to be surrounded by. She is a gifted caretaker and we both felt completely supported by her during a period that is often fraught with stress. She seamlessly blended into our household dynamic and helped us communicate better. Her support was instrumental in helping us adjust to and enjoy our first few weeks as parents. Reassurance, confidence, peace with your partner, and sleep, is priceless to a new family.
