The moment I met Amara I knew I wanted her as my doula.
The day before my birthing day, I was met with a gush of amniotic fluid that didn’t bring on steady, active labor. I was checked into l&d and put on a Pitocin drip. As waves of contractions really started hitting me, it became clear that Amara was needed for her support.
Amara walked into my hospital room with a birthing ball, a tray full of drinks, and a plan. Her position recommendations and gentle reminders about the amazingness of my body are all it took for me to wholeheartedly believe that I COULD and WOULD have the labor I wanted. My husband and I were able to focus on each other and getting through one contraction at a time with her coaching. I credit her suggestion of side lunges with getting me quickly through transition. While I hung onto my husband, heart to heart, Amara moved furniture around me so that I was able to put all my effort into lunging. Those lunges were soon met with an extreme urge to push, and sure enough, my nurse confirmed it was time to push.
Amara was so important during my baby girl’s birth; we had her cut the cord. Before she left she took a picture of our new family. I am simply beaming with pride in that picture. Not only was I proud to have a new, perfect baby, but I was also proud of the fact that I was able to have a medication-free birth, even with Pitocin.
A few weeks after I gave birth, Amara stopped by for our postnatal visit. She ooed and ahhed over my baby, answered some questions I had, and presented us with our birth story. The birth story covered every aspect of our birthing day, complete with all the little details we had already forgotten. I can’t wait for the day that my child will be able to read the story of how she was brought into this world. Thank you Amara.
