I hired Erica two weeks postpartum during a time of crisis- my son had lost a great deal of birth weight and I was toward the beginning of a two-month ordeal in which, lactation consultant on speed dial, I underwent emotionally draining and time-sucking attempts to build my milk supply and was eventually forced to come to terms w. primary lactation failure: due to insufficient glandular tissue, I would ever be able to meet my son's needs through breastfeeding. It was unexpected and extremely painful. In addition, I had all the normal new-baby angst: Who was this screaming creature, and how did I give him a bath?
