I instantly felt a connection to Maria. I really liked that she had so much experience as a doula, and herself had 4 children, so she knew what birth was like! Maria visited us twice before my due date to discuss our wishes, show us techniques to use during labor, and answer any more questions. I felt confident going into my labor.
My labor started on a Saturday morning. My husband and I worked as a team for as long as we could, and then when things got intense, we paged Maria to come to the house. As soon as Maria arrived around 3pm, both my husband and I breathed a sigh of relief. Just knowing that someone who knew what was supposed to be happening was in the house was a major weight off both of our shoulders. Maria put her TENS unit on my back, and that was a huge help. It took the place of my husband having to stop what he was doing to push on my back. He was now free to prepare for the trip to the birth center, and comfort me in other ways. Maria knew just when it was time to head to the birth center.
We got to the birth center at 6pm, and my son wasn't born until 7:25am the next morning. Maria was there with us all night, sitting by my side when I was in the tub. Holding my leg as I pushed on the bed. Sitting beside me when I was on the birth stool or laboring on the toilet. She reminded me how to breathe, and was silent when I needed to take some time to go inwards and labor in my head. With such a long labor, my husband was in and out of sleep, but Maria was there to help. After our 9lb, 9oz baby was born, she helped him latch onto the breast. It was an unforgettable experience, and Maria was an integral part. I chose to have my placenta encapsulated, and she took care of that as well. I couldn't be happier with our choice of doula, Maria, and our healthy baby boy!
