When I found out I was pregnant, my sisters highly recommended hiring a doula based on their own positive experiences. As a first-time mom, I had two plans: 1) an unmedicated delivery 2) deliver in a hospital. I found Susannah at 34 weeks, and luckily, she was available!
From our very first call, I knew Susannah was the right fit. I appreciated her honest, candid feedback about my goals and the realities of pursuing an unmedicated birth in a hospital setting where 95%+ of patients receive epidurals. She helped me stay focused on my intentions while also preparing for any possible outcome, including an epidural or C-section.
Despite our shortened timeline, Susannah made sure we were well prepared. Between our birth planning session and home visit, she shared invaluable information about labor, biomechanics, positioning, and recovery. She also stayed in close contact throughout the final weeks, checking in and sharing helpful resources and movements. When she had a trip planned near my due date (we knew before signing the contract), she arranged backup doula and midwife support, which gave us additional peace of mind.
When labor started at 40w2d, Susannah coached us through early labor and different positions to help things progress. By the time we arrived at the hospital, I was already 9cm! Throughout L&D, she was instrumental in coaching both my husband and me, advocating for my birth intentions with the medical team, and creating a calm, supportive environment. I ultimately delivered our daughter unmedicated and felt empowered throughout the experience.
Her support didn't end at delivery. She continued checking in during our hospital stay and after we returned home, offering resources, reflection, and postpartum support.
Susannah was an incredible partner throughout the birth of our daughter. I am so grateful we found her and would wholeheartedly recommend her to anyone preparing for birth!
