As a birth doula, I feel grateful for the relationships I build with families and the trust they place in me during one of life’s most vulnerable and meaningful experiences. I would like to gently clarify several points.
Prenatal appointments include education, birth preferences, comfort measures, laboring positions, partner involvement, and time for questions. Although I did not bring my full doula bag to the second appointment, the planned educational and practical support was provided.
The birth preference document completed during our first prenatal appointment listed lavender. A copy was provided weeks before delivery and I would have been happy to accommodate any requested change.
My fees, payment schedule, and services are discussed in advance and outlined in my contract. The remaining balance was discussed twice, and additional time to pay was granted. Other reminders concerned a separate optional service for which time had been reserved. When the family declined that service, their decision was fully respected.
When the birth plan changed, my support continued. I arranged an additional consultation to discuss the revised plan. On delivery day, I was present throughout the birth as permitted, and stayed afterward for the agreed-upon postpartum support.
I recognize that I could have been more proactive about scheduling the postpartum visit. I also want to clarify that the message referenced was received at 3:51 PM and answered at 9:47 PM that evening after an unexpected family situation.
Having supported more than 100 families, I know that every experience is unique. I am sorry this family felt they did not receive the value or support they expected. My commitment is to provide compassionate, evidence-informed, individualized support; respect each family’s choices; remain present when plans change; and help families feel heard, cared for, and supported throughout their journey.
