Carol was a blessing to me. She will be the doula I choose every time. Before I met Carol, I had my 1st child. Her birth was traumatizing for me: stuck at 8cm for 24+ hours, transferred to the hospital from a birth center, failed epidural, and then a shoulder dystocia w/ an episiotomy. My husband did his best to be a good birth partner but was very emotional. I was very anxious about labor. (My daughters are 19 months apart so it was fresh). When she became my doula I only had a few months before I was full term. We walked through my prior experience, thoroughly. She gave me helpful tips and advice. Before we even walked into labor she was the calm to my storm. I had a few "false starts" and she remained patient with me. She helped me w/ natural methods to relieve my anxiety, headaches, and nausea. She gave my husband some helpful birth partner advice (he even read the book she sent over for homework)! Fast forward to Sunday May 24, the REAL contractions started. After she had given me extremely comforting counter-pressure we decided it was time to go to the hospital. When we arrived, I was placed in triage for a while. Rythmically contracting with Carol by my side. When the nurses finally came in to check me I was 8cm. Carol encouraged me. She prayed with me. The OB's presence increased my anxiety and decreased my "good baby birthing vibes." Carol helped me refocus. She made sure my birth preferences were visible for and spoke up when we were detracting from my preferences. The nurses and OB were very persistent in trying to get a saline lock placed and encouraging me to get nitrous, an epidural, and take anti-nausea medication... all of which I did not want. With Carol's presence, I had a 100% natural birth at the hospital with my husband positively engaged and participating as the best birth partner. My daughter was born 4 hours after we arrived. ?? My birth experience was redeemed. Thank you Lord and thank you Carol.
