I was apprehensive about getting a doula considering this was my 5th time having a vaginal delivery. My husband and I figured we had done it already, why get a doula this time? This last labor proved to be my hardest labor.
I approached Megan after seeing a post on social media regarding her services. After talking to 2 other doulas, I knew that if I wanted a doula, it would be Megan. Megan is extremely knowledgeable and well versed in everything related to labor and delivery. Having been a labor and delivery nurse at the start of her career, she was familiar with the hospital and all of the standard procedures. Upon laboring at home then at the hospital with intense contractions, I called Megan in around 340am thinking I was close to delivery. Megan came and set the room with soft battery operated candles that helped calm the mood. With each contraction, she applied counter pressure or rubbed my back with massage oil. At one point, I got nauseous; Megan was prepared with peppermint oil that soothed the feeling. Megan made sure I was drinking water and anticipated my needs by bringing me chapstick, wet wash cloths and having different positions to try to labor in. She was incredibly helpful when it came to deciding things like whether to get an epidural vs IV pain medicine, delayed cord clamping, pitocin, and pushing/laboring positions, etc. Towards the end, I had horrible hip pain.. Megan suggested that I get a cervical check thinking I would be ready to push. After all of my research in natural child birth, I had not read anything about hip pain indicating that a mother was completely dilated but Megan was right! The baby wasn't born until 1007pm but Megan stayed with me through it all, advocating for me and encouraging me constantly.
Megan is approachable, responsive to texts, and encouraging through it all. She is very easy to get along with and was an asset to my birth team. I highly recommend her to be your doula.
