We were unsure about hiring a doula prior to our first pregnancy. We're glad that we ended up hiring Lupe. Lupe met with us ahead of time, talked with us to understand our questions about the delivery, and worked with us on a plan that would capture the hopes and mitigate the anxieties we had. We has a planned induction and she was present with us from the very beginning - providing a source of experience and steadfastness as we started the process. Talking to Lupe was also very warm and welcoming, she has a natural aura about her that brings comfort.
While we wanted to follow our birth plan as much as possible, the labor did not proceed as planned. Lupe worked closely with us to make sure that our desires were respected, talked with us through the options available, and made sure that we were comfortable before any actions were taken medically. Not only that, but she also advocated for us in the hospital against a specific type of induction medication (due to a previous bad experience) when the doctors and nurses were pushing us to take it.
Eventually, it became clear that a c-section would be necessary. Lupe helped us with the acceptance of this change and was present with us through the delivery of our daughter. After we returned home, Lupe checked in with us several times as a new family to see how we were settling in and provided additional tips and wisdom.
From my husband's perspective: Lupe was a lifesaver, ensured that he could get a little bit of sleep during the overnight labor, helped with some of the labor positions, and assisted with the many emotions that were present during delivery. She also took GREAT pictures!
