I met Kate during our doula training, and she immediately impressed me with her approach and communication style. When I became pregnant, I knew exactly who I wanted as my doula, and I was so thankful that Kate was available. She was working on her certification, but for some reason I didn't expect to be treated as a regular client. Kate knew better and showed her professionalism by setting up a meet-and-greet, asking questions that mattered, and providing a thorough, well-prepared agreement. As a doula, I had all the important-to-me birth preferences identified, and I didn't consider that I needed the same care as any first-time parent-to-be. Choosing Kate as my doula meant that I not only got the care that I needed, but that I got more than I expected for myself.
Nothing goes exactly as planned during a birth. I had to adjust my plan based on my hospital and what my birth experience presented - no water births allowed and an epidural that made my desired birthing positions impossible. Kate was there to offer support through each adjustment and helped me navigate past ideals and through the birth experience I was living, but also helped my husband through his stress. She was calm, a soothing presence, and an advocate holding space for what I wanted and needed. Kate truly made a difference in my birth story, but her postpartum care also made a difference. Again, despite my training, I didn't expect to be a regular client; however, Kate was an excellent doula. She checked in and came by to make sure I was healing and that we were all adjusting to life as a family of three. I am so glad that I chose Kate as my doula. I wish she had been available for my second birth, but she set the bar for my second experience, and it was better as a result.
