Working with Michele was awesome! This was my spouse and I's second time using District Doulas, Michele's team, and again definitely the right call. The team provides preparation (multiple classes) for birthing individuals (and partners if applicable). We did several of the classes in person, and then watched a few things online. We met with Michele in advance of the birth to discuss our birth preferences. We asked questions in advance of the birth. For example, I had spotting the morning I gave birth, which is no guarantee labor will start, but the reassurance and appropriate measured conversation helped me greatly. My positive outcome with a 4.5 hour labor was made more possible because of choices made with support of Michele. I was really hoping to go unmedicated and I was able to do so! I was also able to birth my baby in a position other than flat on my back which was far less hard on parts of my body.
Michele was reachable during the first few minutes after labor started at 38 weeks and gave tips in the moment to help me get to an unmedicated birth - for instance how to respond to the initial needed cervical exam upon arrival at the hospital. My spouse and I had prepped by practicing different comfort measures - and Michele upon arrival during labor was able to remind us of ones we/I could easily do. I'm not a stoic, so having guidance on how to deal with my mental game also helped (I got further than I had dared hope).
I was able to experience an incredible uninterrupted golden hour with our new baby. Michele stayed with us after the birth in the delivery room . We had check-ins and in in-depth follow up in the days/weeks after birth. Because the birth was so positive, I could really sense the amazing transition from uncomfortable pregnancy to smooth postpartum, able to cuddle and enjoy our new baby.
