From the moment I first connected with Alaska for a consultation, I knew she was the doula I wanted in my corner, and wow, am I glad she was! I was looking for someone who was warm but firm, a little woo-woo but still grounded, and able to help us navigate the hardest moments with a sense of humor. And that's exactly what we found in Alaska.
I planned to have an unmedicated birth, and in the weeks leading up to delivery, Alaska encouraged me think deeply about my 'why' while also preparing me with a wide range of pain-management tools and coping strategies. My husband and I took her 4 week birthing class over Zoom alongside other expecting parents, and we found those sessions incredibly informative, supportive, and genuinely fun.
When my due date passed and my doctor recommended an induction, Alaska immediately sprang into action. She was an invaluable advocate and sounding board as we weighed our options. Thanks to her guidance and support, I was able to avoid the induction and went into labor spontaneously the next day. Two additional hospital visits, 60 hours of labor, and, yes, eventually an epidural and Pitocin later, we welcomed our baby girl into the world with Alaska by our side.
I cannot imagine navigating all those surprises, decisions, twists, and turns without her. I feel like Alaska helped us find the sweet spot at the center of a Venn diagram between modern medicine and intuitive birthing wisdom. She gave us access to both, and because of that, I never felt like I had to choose one over the other. I love how much she values community and dedicates so much of her time to cultivating one for new moms. Her postpartum circle was a real added bonus in those early weeks when live with a newborn can feel so isolating. It's clear Alaska lives and breathes babies and births and there's no better person to see you through what will be the most challenging, transformative, and monumentous experiences of your life!
