As first time queer parents, my wife and I sought a doula who would help us feel safe, strong, and cared-for. Jin knocked it completely out of the park in all ways. From our very first meeting, they brought a calm, grounding, sweet and funny energy that showed us we were in the best of hands. Before the birth, Jin ensured that we felt confident about comfort measures to take during birth, positions to try, and what to expect (to the extent anyone can prepare you for that). Our delivery did not go as planned, and Jin was there with us as a medically-knowledgeable guide, active participant, and friend the entire way. There were multiple transition points during my wife's labor journey, and Jin helped us process each as they were happening so that what could have been very scary instead felt empowered. We were not anticipating a hospital transfer, but with Jin along for the ride, it felt like we could relax and trust the process because they would make sure we understood what was happening and what any options were. We were definitely not expecting a c-section (our little one, it turned out, was not so little!) but as Jin said, "A C-section is a perfectly normal and lovely way to have a baby." I still can't believe they were up for three days with us, and will always feel like their presence kept the experience from feeling traumatic.
Once our little one was here, Jin helped our family be born. They held space for both of our struggles and fears and were especially effective in helping my wife start her breastfeeding journey. Their two postpartum visits were more like incredible therapy sessions with a trusted friend, where we both got to process and meet each other where we were at. As my wife said, it was like they completely reshaped the energy in our home. They left us feeling like every birthing person should have a doula like Jin.
