My husband and I are truly grateful for Phelicia for such an empowering childbirth experience. She has expert-level knowlege about what to expect during the late pregnancy, labor, and delivery process, anticipating what questions and decisions will arise at appointments and during delivery and asking how I wanted to proceed in advance (do you want membrane sweeping, do you want your water broken, etc.). This gave me time to think about what I wanted before I had to make the choice. She helped make birth an incredibly empowering experience for me.
One of her true superpowers is having zero judgement about how I wanted to give birth. When I met with other doulas during the selection process, they often expressed their preference for a type of birth experience - birthing center, home birth, natural birth, etc. If Phelicia had a preference, I never knew it, and she 100% supported all of the decisions I wanted to make and advocated for me throughout the process. She was also extremely zen and flexible in the delivery room - I was kind of a zombie for awhile, and she was unbothered by the fact that I was lying there for a few hours just waiting. She also helped make sure my husband was included in meaningful ways, and she was great at talking to both of us and treating us as a team. My husband and I both agreed that she was a truly invaluable part of our birth experinece and success in bringing our son into the world.
I'm a physician assistant and had a good idea of what to expect from a medical standpoint. Because of this, I questioned whether I really 'needed' a doula; I opted for one because research suggests birth outcomes are better for the birthing parent and baby. In hindsight, having a doula, and specifically Phelicia, was so incredibly valuable and a very distinct skill from my medical background. I can see why outcomes are so much better. In short, I can't recommend Phelicia more highly!
