Lea was truly my guardian angel during my first pregnancy and birth in 2023.
I’m from Brazil, and initially one reason my husband wanted a doula was the language. He worried that during labor I would naturally switch to Portuguese. Finding Lea, whose first language is also Portuguese, immediately made us comfortable. But she became so much more than that.
I remember reading that she wasn’t just there to massage you and braid your hair, she was a “lawyer” doula who would advocate for her clients and help communicate with the medical team. I had no idea how much we would need that.
I wanted an unmedicated birth, and Lea knew and respected my wishes. At the hospital, there were moments when I felt the medical team wasn’t listening to me. I started doubting myself. Lea never made decisions for me, but she reminded me of what I had chosen before labor and helped me stay connected to my wishes.
During delivery, the team struggled to monitor my baby’s heartbeat. I told a nurse I needed to push and was told it wasn’t time. Seconds later, my baby came out and fell to the floor.
Everything became a blur. I was terrified, asking for my baby, and I will never forget Lea’s voice:
“She’s crying. She’s okay. She’s okay.”
Those words stayed with me.
I’m forever grateful Lea was there to advocate for me, support my husband, remind me of my strength, and be a calm voice during one of the scariest moments of my life. We trusted her again for the birth of our second baby in 2025, and I couldn’t imagine either birth without her.
