We originally hired Lea because she speaks Portuguese and shares the same Brazilian roots as my wife, Aline. We thought having someone who could communicate with her in her own language during labor would help. It did, but that became the smallest reason we were grateful for Lea.
As first-time parents, Lea prepared us for birth in a way no one else did. She educated us, answered our questions, and helped us create a birth plan Aline felt confident about.
Unfortunately, our delivery at Kaiser on Geary in San Francisco became the worst experience of our lives. We encountered faulty equipment, dismissive and inexperienced staff, and an understaffed unit. Most frighteningly, our daughter fell and hit the hospital floor during birth while a nurse was focused on getting a fetal heart rate reading.
Through all of it, Lea was the one person we trusted completely. She never left us. She calmly supported Aline in Portuguese and became our guardian angel in a room where we had lost faith in everyone else.
After our daughter was born, I was afraid to leave her side. Lea stayed with us, helped us get some rest, and even had her husband bring me vegan food when there was nothing I could eat at the hospital since I’m vegan. Lea asked her husband to cook and bring dinner for me in the hospital! That is the kind of care we are talking about.
The hospital gave us the worst experience of our lives, but Lea was the light in it. We will never forget what she did for our family. If you are having a baby in the Bay Area, have Lea with you. The best decision you will make.
