When my baby decided to arrive 5 weeks early, everything happened unexpectedly Joann was at the hospital within the hour. My labour was incredibly fast—my baby boy arrived in less than 5 hours—and nothing like what we had talked about during our prenatal sessions. In the middle of such a whirlwind, having a familiar face there made me feel instantly calmer and safer.
Joann made me feel empowered and heard. She explained what was happening so I could understand and genuinely consent to the decisions being made. I remember being offered a shot to help deliver the placenta, but I couldn't remember what it was or why I might want it. Joann simply explained what it was and why it was an option. That small moment made a huge difference—I felt informed rather than like things were just happening to me.
During labour, she helped with breathing, positions, and keeping me calm. She wiped my face, fixed my bangs, and took care of the things I didn't have the capacity to think about. When I struggled to communicate whether I wanted to say yes or no to something, Joann advocated for me while still respecting my choices. Without her, I truly feel I may have been pushed toward things I didn't fully understand or want.
She was amazing with my partner, guiding him on how to support me and reassuring him throughout labour. He felt much more confident having her there.
Joann was a saving grace postpartum too.
She took photos during labour and delivery, which I am SO grateful for being able to look back on those moments is incredibly special and something I wouldn't have been able to capture.
Joann is a warm, genuine, supportive human. I truly don't ever want to give birth without her again. If you're debating whether to hire a doula: 1000% yes. Hiring Joann was one of the best decisions I made.
