I'm writing this testimonial from the perspective of a father/non-birthing parent.
Full disclosure, I did not know what a doula was until my wife was pregnant and we started discussing what type of birth we wanted to have. We decided we wanted to try for an unmedicated vaginal birth at a birth center and arrived at a hiring a doula as a way to help prepare mentally and physically for this event. Initially we were on the fence about spending money on a doula, but I now consider hiring Mia to be one of the best returns on investment I've ever made.
Leading up to the birth, Mia made several visits to our home to discuss our birth plan, educate us on newborn care, coach my wife on breastfeeding, and provide general guidance to us as first time parents. Throughout the pregancy, she was readily available for any questions we had (we had a lot) - and we grew to trust her immensely.
For the birth itself, Mia was over at our house around midnight when my wife was in early labor. She stayed with us throughout the entire labor and post-birth. The experience was as good as it could possibly have been. I sincerely believe Mia's efforts to prepare us, her coaching during labor, and her calming presence made the labor itself shorter and less traumatic than it otherwise could have been.
After the birth, Mia has been over to our place a couple times to check up on how we were doing and assist with breastfeeding. She has continued to be a great resource and friendly sounding board to us as we navigate parenthood.
Mia is also just a cool person who is easy to talk to and fun to be around. I can't overstate how important this is because the doula is someone you'll be spending a lot of time with and who will be present during one of the most intense experiences of your life.
11/10 experience, if and when we decide to have a second child we will be working with her again.
