I never really knew what it meant to “ hold space for someone “ until Lauralee did just that for me during labor and birth. She was gentle and professional to those around us (hospital birth) but fierce protector of my environment and well being. I’m forever grateful for her time and energy expenditure. When I first met Lauralee I confessed my people pleasing tendencies and I knew immediately that I wouldn’t have to do that with her. I also was so caught up in my first birth and how I thought i wasn’t doing it right because of everyone else’s opinions but what does that even mean? Specifically, I told Lauralee “ I’m worried I won’t know how to breathe correctly” and she said something so simple but changed my entire outlook and confidence “ you have kept yourself alive by breathing all your life and you’ll do it in labor too”. The days leading up to and including labor and birth she was a steady presence that reassured me and my husband. I could never thank her enough . The knowledge and professionalism is top notch. I’m also happy to now call her my friend. I mean if someone sees you 9.5cm dilated standing on a hospital bed completely naked I feel like you’re morally contracted to be friends forever , idk I don’t make the rules. I was able to achieve the type of birth I set out to have and I couldn’t have done it without her. She doesn’t know it yet but I'm going to be asking her to be my doula again and if you’ve read this far , you should too.
