Having Christa as our doula was an incredible support for both of us, but from my perspective as the husband and father, I’m especially grateful for what her presence allowed me to do for my wife.
Going into the birth, I knew I wanted to support my wife in every way I could, but there is only so much you can prepare for. Watching the person you love go through labour, it can be difficult to know what she needs, what you should be doing, or whether what is happening is normal. Christa took so much of that uncertainty away.
She never replaced my role as my wife’s support person — she made me better at it. She helped me understand what was happening, gave me ideas for how I could help, and reassured me when I wasn’t sure what to do. Her presence allowed me to focus on being there for my wife rather than worrying about whether I was doing the right thing.
Christa supported us as a team. She knew when to step in and when to step back, and I never felt pushed aside or unnecessary. Instead, I felt more confident and capable of supporting my wife. I could also step away when I needed to eat, take a break, or collect myself, knowing my wife was supported and never alone.
I went into the experience thinking a doula was primarily support for the mother. I came away realizing how valuable that support is for the father as well. I would absolutely recommend Christa, especially to fathers who want to be actively involved in the birth. Having her there made a huge difference for both of us, and I’m incredibly grateful she was part of such an important day for our family.
