WOW! I'll be honest—I wasn't sure I wanted to hire a doula early on in my pregnancy. I was receiving care from a group of midwives, and as a first-time mom, I didn't understand the difference between what a midwife and a doula could each bring to the birth experience. I had also been told by several people that if you have one, you don't really need the other.
Looking back now…Wow, I am so glad I had both. I honestly owe it to my husband for encouraging us to hire a doula because I truly cannot imagine my labor and delivery without Gretchen.
Gretchen was truly a calm, steady presence that I didn't even realize I would need. She has such an incredible ability to take charge when necessary while remaining so tenderhearted and nurturing. During labor, she coached me, encouraged me, advocated for me, and celebrated every step of the process.
What meant the most, though, was that her support started long before we ever stepped foot in the hospital. Through prenatal appointments, countless text messages, and all of the education and encouragement she provided, she helped me feel prepared and confident going into birth. I always knew I had someone in my corner.
Although I ultimately wasn't able to have one of my midwives attend my birth, I honestly didn't care because I knew Gretchen would be there with me. That gave me so much peace.
If you're on the fence about hiring a doula, let this be your sign. Gretchen was one of the best investments we made for my birth experience, and I truly cannot recommend her enough.
